Going to Boquete's Orchid Fest is always on my list of activities.

Hiking in almost any rainforest trail in Panama and you will see orchids although one has to really look for them and have a good eye to find them. There are about 1,500 species of orchids in Panama, making it one of the most orchid rich countries in the world. They can be minature or grand, but without a doubt they are mystical. Many varieties of orchid in Panama are on the verge of extinction. It is illegal to take orchids found in the rainforest, but it amazes me always that people take them even those who have hiked with me have dug up a plant in the forest and I cringe each every time that I see this. My thought is why not love it's beauty and cherish it's beauty by taking a photo of a lovely plant or flower in it's natural habitat. I have neve understood this and am sadden by it.

While walking through a rainforest, I have come across orchids dangling from a tree limb or hidden between low growing lush green plants.

Check out some of my photos from the orchid show at the Orchid Fair here in Boquete.
